About us
Our Story
Rolwaling is the name of the valley where Chhiring was born and grew up. In the local Sherpa language Rolwaling means a playground of the angels. It is regarded as a Beyul – a sacred hidden valley believed to be the abode of deity Dakini Tashi Tsheringma.
Mountaineering expeditions reached Rolwaling in the 1950s.
It was Chhiring’s grandfather late Pem Budar Sherpa, who had helped manage the logistics for the 1955 Merseyside Expedition. That expedition was led by a veteran mountaineer late Alfred Gregory, who was a member of the historic Everest Expedition of 1953 along with Sir Edmund Hillary.
After Chhiring’s grandfather passed away his uncle carried on the mountaineering career actively and also brought Chhiring into trekking and mountaineering occupation.

Thus, Chhiring continued the family tradition and began working in mountaineering when he was a teenager. Over the years, Chhiring became one of Nepal’s most accomplished and respected mountaineering guides. In 2013, Chhiring was awarded the Explorers Club’s Tenzing Norgay Award in recognition for his heroism on K2, where he bravely saved the life of another climber. Chhiring’s life story is recounted in Buried in the Sky, a book that Outside magazine has described as a contemporary mountaineering classic.
Chhiring now lives in Colorado, but the Rolwaling valley remains close to his heart. Chhiring is committed to giving back to the communities where he guides and established the Chhiring Foundation to assist with the education and medical care of Rolwaling’s children.
